If
you’re alone in this world and have no one to turn to when you become
ill, or can no longer look after yourself with competence, the Florida Department
of Veterans Affairs has the answer. Right here in the great state of Florida
we have our very own VA, which is in no way related to the U. S. Dept. of Veterans
Affairs. The fine folks of the Florida VA operate six Living Centers for Florida
veterans who wish to spend their last days in a companionable atmosphere.
In each Center, a minimum of 60 beds is reserved for patients with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Five of these centers are skilled nursing facilities with the ability to treat any illness. They are spread around the state and have the availability of skilled nursing care for their residents. They are also esthetically pleasing, clean and modern, with state of the art medical facilities.
In Volusia County, there is
The Emory L. Bennett State Veterans Community Living Center in Daytona Beach
since 1993. 120 beds. Contact number is (386) 274-3460.
In Land O’ Lakes in Pasco County The Baldomero Lopez State Veterans CLC
has been caring for veterans since 1999. 120 beds. Their Contact number is (813)
558-5000.
In 2001, in Pembroke Pines, Broward County, the Alexander “Sandy” Nininger State Veterans CLC opened. 120 beds. Contact: (954) 985-4824.
The Clifford C. Sims State Veterans CLC has been in Springfield in Bay County since 2003. Contact number is (850) 747-5401.
The Douglas T. Jacobson State Veterans CLC opened in 2004 in Port Charlotte in Charlotte County. 120 beds. Contact number is (914) 613-0919.
The sixth location is an assisted living facility built in 1990, the forerunner of the others, which provides a special combination of housing, personalized supportive services and incidental medical care to eligible veterans. The Robert H. Jenkins, Jr. Veterans Domiciliary Home is located in Daytona Beach, it is the largest, since it has 150 beds for veterans who are able to feed and dress themselves and only need minor assisted living care. Contact number is (386) 758-0600.
And finally, there is another beautiful nursing facility being built. The Clyde E. Lassen State Veterans CLC is being finished as this is written and will be opening in St. Augustine in St. Johns County in late 2010. It will have 120 beds with the requisite 60 assigned to dementia/Alzheimer’s, and bring the total of available beds for veterans in the state to 870.
Eligibility is determined
by the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs, so, if you wish to be part of
the program, the best thing to do is call the nearest facility and ask how to
have your name added into the system. They will need your DD-214, but if you’re
a veteran with disabilities, you know that’s always a necessity.
It is commendable
that in the past legislators in this great state had the foresight to establish
their own department to see to the needs of their veterans, and they and the
state are to be congratulated on their stellar efforts to serve and care for
our retired military.
