Community Relations

Florida veterans are mourning the loss of Admiral Leroy Collins, Jr. a friend to vets for many years in his position as Executive Director of the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs. His untimely death in a collision with an SUV leaves Florida vets without a leader or an advocate to work effectively on behalf of the older veterans living here. Ben Ritter, the Government Relations Director from Florida Gulf Coast PVA and I attended his funeral on Monday, August 2nd. Governor Charlie Crist was there, as well as several congressmen, the Commanding General of the Marines and the Navy Commandant. Admiral Collins’s father was a past Governor of Florida. The Admiral was buried beside his parents in The Grove, a special plot behind the Governor’s Mansion in Tallahassee. Rest in Peace, Admiral

On Tuesday, August 3, neighborhoods throughout the City of Orlando joined thousands of communities across the country to celebrate the 27th annual National Night Out. This annual event is a fun way for Neighborhood Watch groups to bring neighbors together as they work to improve crime and drug prevention awareness, generate participation in local anti-crime programs, increase neighborhood spirit and strengthen police-community partnerships.

Neighborhood Watch groups play a vital role in keeping our community safe. Over the last three years, the City of Orlando has seen a dramatic reduction in crime due in part to an increase in Neighborhood Watch. Residents are the eyes and ears of law enforcement. Not only does Neighborhood Watch allow our residents to help in the fight against crime, it is also an opportunity for our neighbors to bond through service

Last year, the City of Orlando took third place in the nation for their outstanding participation in this event by hosting 79 parties throughout the City. For more information, visit the website at www.neighborhoodlink.com You’ll find all the info to start in your neighborhood. If you’d like Neighborhood Watch in your area, Start it! Put a note in your neighbor’s mailboxes, set up an evening meeting, talk about it. Don’t stay home and spend your time regretting the things you can no longer do, there’s a lot you can do. DO IT???????
