It is with great sadness we report that R. Jack Powell passed away in his sleep at his home in Longwood, Florida, on Tuesday, September 14. As Executive Director of the national office of PVA, Jack was instrumental in its growth from a small veterans’ organization to the dynamic entity it is today. Jack put PVA “on the map” through overseeing its move from suburban Maryland to a prominent location in Washington, D.C. and by working to ensure that our influence was greater than our numbers.
He was responsible for the growth of a highly motivated, professional staff that he directed to serve PVA’s members, all veterans and people with disabilities. He oversaw the significant growth of PVA’s resources and its commensurate increase in influence in the Halls of Congress and throughout government.
In recognition of his dedication and efforts Jack Powell received PVA’s highest accolade, the “Speedy Award” in 1998. A veteran of 5th Special Forces, US Army, he was injured in Vietnam and medically retired at the rank of Captain. He is survived by his wife Lynn, his daughter Megan, and one granddaughter. He will be missed by all, but his legacy will be perpetuated by what he established at PVA. Rest well, dear friend, and thank you for your service to your country, your fellow veterans and our organization.
